Storm’s US Open Triumph
After 21 long years, alongside mixed doubles partner, John Peers, Women’s Tennis Foundation scholarship holder, Storm Sanders has broken the Australian drought, being crowned US Open Champion in the mixed doubles. The last time this event was won by an Australian pair, was when Todd Woodbridge & Rennae Stubbs defeated Lisa Raymond and Leander Paes in 2001.
This was the first Grand Slam the pair had played together and Storm’s first Grand Slam title.
Storm & John beat Belgian Kirsten Flipkens and Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin in an epic battle, coming back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-4 (10/7) in the final in New York.
Our 28-year-old scholar said "I can't believe we're grand slam champions."
The match was played with Sam Stosur in the crowd, with Storm - now a champion in her own right - saying to her, "It's a pleasure to play in front of a champion like you."
A humble and gracious winner - congratulations, Storm!
